In the business world, we are always working hard towards our goals but also to make our community a better place.  We are invested in a thriving community because it allows us to build our businesses as well as our families, friendships, fellowship in the community and to contribute to ensuring that our city is the best place possible to live and work.  Non-profit organizations are the glue that holds our community together; they are the source of initiatives that are focused solely on helping to make an impact on the lives of those who live in our community—to make our tiny part of the world a better place for all, and for many, their work reaches out to affect more than just the Omaha community.  These organizations also create jobs in our community and allow people to do what they love while touching lives and truly making a difference.  Many people who work in the non-profit world do so because of their true passion for the cause—they really care and we highly commend them for all that they do in and for our community.

We can all contribute to the valuable work that our non-profits are doing every day.  Whether you offer your time, talents, or prefer to donate money or items to the cause, there’s always a need that can be met with whatever you have to give. However, with the ever growing number of non-profit organizations it can be hard to decide which to focus your efforts on.   It is important to understand that all non-profits are not created equal, so make sure to do your research before making the commitment to support a particular organization.  Transparency is highly regarded in the non-profit sector, so even spending just a few minutes doing your due diligence to ensure that a majority of the funds they are generating will be used specifically for the cause they are promoting will do the trick.  But above all, it should be something that aligns with your beliefs or that you are passionate about.  We are all at different points in our lives, but there truly are a multitude of organizations and so many different ways to get involved in creating positive and lasting change in our community.

Our outstanding local non-profits have woven themselves into the fabric of our community and in this way, make it stronger—doing what needs to be done today, every day to make sure that the future is bright.  As businesses/organizations and as individuals, it is our duty to pitch in whenever and however we can to be good community partners.  We are so lucky to live in a community with so many local non-profits who work tirelessly to promote awareness and do the important work that makes Omaha a better place to live, work and play.  The wonderful local non-profit organizations we’ve highlighted are all among the ones that we are proud to partner with and support, and we encourage you to learn more about their mission and the important work they do right here in our community.

Rebuilding Together Omaha provides free home repairs to elderly homeowners with low-income in the most distressed areas in our community. We serve those who have no resources to pay for needed repairs. We engage over 800 volunteers annually to help us with repairs and renovations.

Last year we served 193 homeowners with free home repairs, including 88 roof projects. The repairs completed includes plumbing and electrical repairs as well as remodeling bathrooms and kitchen, installing grab bars, ramps and railings and replacing roofs and gutters. All of these repairs have a significant impact in the life of an elderly homeowner by helping them to live in a safe, warm and healthy home.

Funds are needed for the 145 homeowners on our waitlist. Contribution would allow us to continue to serve those on our waitlist but also help us meet the needs of the new requests for repairs.  Please donate today!

Children’s Scholarship Fund of Omaha (CSF) believes that all families, regardless of income, should be able to choose the best educational setting for their children.  CSF provides tuition assistance scholarships so children from low-income families can access the private or parochial K-8 education of their choice.  CSF is destination neutral and has no religious affiliation—children attend approximately 80 different schools across Omaha and northeast Nebraska.  A crucial piece of the CSF program is the commitment it requires from families. Each CSF family must contribute $500 toward their children’s education and their children must achieve a 90% attendance rate.  Since 1999, more than 27,000 scholarships have been awarded.

CSF Omaha relies solely upon donations to provide scholarships.  If you or your company would like to make a donation or receive more information, please contact the Children’s Scholarship Fund of Omaha (CSF) office.

Logo_Kids_Against_Hunger_Omaha_Nebraska

Kids Against Hunger is a non-profit humanitarian organization working in the Omaha community to engage volunteers in a hands-on service activity that benefits families around the corner and around the world—simply by packaging four dry food ingredients purchased with monetary donations.

When mixed with water, these ingredients make a lifesaving fortified rice and protein casserole.  These meals, which cost only 25 cents each, are packed by volunteers and donated to third world countries, local food pantries and disaster relief areas here and abroad.  Over 3 million meals have been packed locally since the Omaha satellite was established in 2009.  During the organization’s annual Million Meal March 1 million of those meals are packed alone, which are then donated to 38 different Nebraska food pantries.

Kids Against Hunger is currently looking for businesses and corporate sponsors who are interested in donating funds for packing events at its warehouse here in Omaha.  For more information about Kids Against Hunger, please call (402) 213-1718, email kah@omahakah.com, or visit www.omahakah.com.

Community 360° is a non-profit organization that recruits, screens, trains, and places volunteers in nursing homes to visit people living in nursing homes who never receive a visitor.  Less than half of all people living in nursing homes receive a visitor.   Research has shown that people living in nursing homes who receive a regular visitor need less medications, have higher self-esteem, receive better care and have a higher quality of life.   Currently 200 Community 360° volunteers visit nursing homes throughout the Omaha Metro area and assure that the people they visit are not forgotten.

In addition to day-to-day recruiting efforts, Community 360° also sponsors two city-wide events each year.  “Cards4Kids@Heart” ensures that every one of the 5,000 residents in the Omaha area living in a nursing home receives a visitor and a Valentine card.  “Christmas In Our Hearts” is a free concert held on the first Thursday in December which consists of both professional and amateur singers and musicians plus a lot of great volunteers to help get people in and out of the concert hall safely. The concert is attended by some 300 nursing home residents representing 27 nursing facilities.

Community 360° is currently looking for people who would like to become a companion and volunteer for a few hours each week at a local nursing home in the Omaha area. For more information about Community 360° visit www.community-360.org, email judi@community-360.org, or call (402) 556-8032.

Logo_Metro_Area_Youth_Foundation_Omaha_Nebraska

The Metro Area Youth Foundation (MAYF) was formed eight years ago by a group of Omaha area Optimist Club members who wanted to do more for families and children experiencing cancer. The goal is to allow the families to focus on the children not the money they owe by providing a short term financial bridge.  Many of these families were already struggling financially; a cancer diagnosis can often mean that only one parent can continue to work, adding to the burden.  In the past two years alone, MAYF has been able to provide over 75 families a chance to keep the water and power on, rent to stay in their apartment, a mortgage payment to keep their home and a chance to keep life as stable and normal as possible.

For more information about how you can get involved or donate to MAYF’s Childhood Cancer Campaign, please call (402) 871-6246.
