River City 6: Scott Mcconnell

Farmers Insurance and Financial Services has been in business since 1929 and has since grown into one of the largest insurance providers in the country. Scott Mcconnell is the Veterans Career Development Manager at the Farmers Insurance District 46 office.

How did you get started in the business? – I was looking for a rewarding career where I could be a leader and a mentor while utilizing the skills I have gained as a veteran. Fortunately Rebecca Sobus, the district recruiting and training manager in Omaha, gave me that exact opportunity at Farmers Insurance.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? – Being promoted to Sergeant First Class in the army after years of hard work and mentorship to others is one of the best to date.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – Learning how to dress as a business professional.

Tell us a little about your family. – I have a beautiful wife named Athena and three amazing boys: Gabriel, Angelo, and Apollo. We enjoy watching and playing football and being outdoors.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – Getting married and having children are the biggest by far but I would say deployment to Afghanistan made me realize that this life is absolutely everything we make it.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Spending time with my family and/or hunting.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I lived in a homeless shelter as a child and I want to have a successful enough career that I can impact the current rate of childhood homelessness.

What are you the most proud of? – That I’ve been able to help others and show people opportunities that they might not have known were available to them or attainable otherwise. I take great pride in giving back to my community and my service to my country.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – Listen to those that are older than you so you do not have to make every mistake.

If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? – Resilient.

If you had a theme song, what would it be? – “Face Everything And Rise” by Papa Roach.

What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? – I really appreciate the Siena/Francis House and all they do. I have seen the help and support they give and their outreach has positively affected the lives of so many people.

What is your favorite local restaurant? – Sinful Burger in Bellevue because the service, food, and drinks are always amazing.

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – Nikola Tesla.
