Tell us a little about your business. – I am an estate planning counselor.  I say counselor rather than attorney because it is my goal to help counsel families as to how to plan their Wills, Powers of Attorney, and/or Trust documents.  My goal is to be their lifelong counselor, which means that we will meet and communicate about their plan every year.  In addition to the initial plan that we set up, updates and revisions are just as important and are addressed every other year and in between as needed.

How did you get started in the business? – I’ve been a practicing attorney since 1981.  In that time I have been a public defender, a prosecutor, a State Department of Health attorney, and a private practicing attorney.  When I resumed my own private practice again in 2006, I decided that I would focus on estate planning.  Currently, over 90% of the work I do is estate planning.  The remaining 10% is related to estate planning in that it involves probate, trust administration, guardianships and conservatorships.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – Resuming my own private practice of law.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? – Earning a reputation in the community that is built upon honesty, serving my clients and the community, and integrity.

Tell us a little about your family. – My wife, Teresa, and I have been together for 38 years.  Teresa has been an English teacher at Gross Catholic High School for over 30 years.  Our oldest son, Thomas Dorwart, is currently sharing office space with me and is a newly licensed New York attorney.  Our second oldest son is working and living in Portland, Oregon.  Our third oldest son is a student at UNL.  Our daughter graduated from Creighton University on May 17, 2014 and is looking to begin her career in marketing and finance.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – Attending Creighton University and meeting my wife.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Family activities of any kind.  I enjoy attending Creighton athletic events, especially CU basketball and baseball, and the College World Series.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I am originally from Sidney, Nebraska.  Also, it is my goal to help the 70% of Americans who don’t have an estate plan to complete an estate plan.

What are you the most proud of? – Being from a great Nebraska family, marrying into a great Nebraska family and having a great immediate Nebraska family.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – To always remember that patience is a virtue.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? – Heaven is for Real
