Hillcrest Health Services’ Director of Quality and Education, Dr. Anna Fisher, has been awarded the APEX 2015 Award of Excellence in the category of Health and Medical Writing for her work on “Best Practices for Engaging Patients with Dementia.”

Dr. Anna Fisher and Dr. Jennifer Volland, vice president of program development at National Research Corporation in Lincoln, NE, co-authored the publication, which was featured in Nursing2015, one of the largest nursing journals in the world.

APEX 2015, the 27th Annual Awards for Publication Excellence, is an international competition that recognizes outstanding publications from newsletters and magazines to annual reports, brochures and websites.

The original article was published in November 2014 and addresses the enormous responsibility and often emotional and financial burden of caring for those with dementia and examines how Montessori Method techniques can be used to engage patients and their family members to provide better care.

The article also references the Montessori intergenerational program at Hillcrest Mable Rose assisted living in Bellevue, NE, where students in grades 7 to 12 from the Montessori International School of the Plains in Omaha coach and engage residents using Montessori activities.
