In recognition of National Diabetes Awareness Month, Breakthrough T1D (breakthrought1d.org) (formerly JDRF) is encouraging Nebraskans to participate in its Early Detection screening program for type 1 diabetes (T1D). The initiative aims to identify individuals at risk for T1D before symptoms appear, providing the opportunity for early intervention and improved health outcomes.

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease in which the body attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Insulin is a vital hormone that helps the body convert food into energy, and people with T1D require insulin therapy to survive. Most diagnosed individuals have no family history of the disease, making early detection critical.

A simple blood test can detect autoantibodies, markers indicating that the immune system is attacking insulin-producing cells. Advances in research now allow for risk detection years before symptoms develop, potentially preventing serious complications associated with T1D.

The Breakthrough T1D Early Detection program provides education, awareness and resources for participants, including guidance on preventive treatments or enrollment in clinical trials. Screenings are available through a physician’s office or at no cost through research studies.
