Cyber Attacks on Critical Infrastructure
Recently Rensenhouse, Fortinet and Huffman Engineering joined forces on a Fireside chat webcast highlighting the need for valued partnerships across automation journeys especially in the water/wastewater utility industry.
Bill Schmidt, Principal Solutions Consultant with Rensenhouse states, “All of the utilities now, whether they’re large, small, or somewhere in between, they all are aware of the need for network infrastructure, just the drive for data getting visibility into their processes and equipment. And they’re all very aware of cybersecurity threats. There are many cases every day about another utility being compromised in some fashion, and they’re, hyper focused on that and the security part of it, making sure they are not the next victim of some sort of ransomware or malware attack.”
Cybersecurity Upgrades
According to Braden Hadwiger, PE Project Engineer for Huffman Engineering, Inc., “the biggest challenge we see a lot of times is older plants that think, ‘we don’t need security. We are air gapped or, we don’t we don’t need to implement that here because we’re not connected to the Internet.’ As things progress through the project and go along, you find out that, well, maybe they’re actually not air gapped, and they didn’t know it. Or they think they’re protected, and they’re really not.”
