November is the month that we’re reminded to give thanks. Maybe it sounds a bit cheesy, but there is nothing silly about showing gratitude. That’s why I want to have an “attitude of gratitude” and take this opportunity to share what I’m thankful for. With Veterans Day this month, I am especially thankful for the men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedom. It takes a lot of sacrifice to do what they do, and they deserve our respect. Their families also deserve our admiration as they have had to sacrifice too by being apart from their spouse or child or parent—whoever it may be.
Even with the craziness we might see or experience in the world today, there is still no doubt that America is the greatest country. I think many might unknowingly take it for granted. The younger generations, including my own generation, don’t know war like the generations before us. We’re blessed to be able to feel safe in the place we call home. This is thanks to our active military and our veterans.
According to va.gov, there are currently over 143,000 of veterans living in Nebraska. Many of them rely on resources that are designed to help them integrate back into society or recover from post-traumatic stress. We have amazing local nonprofits that provide these services and resources for veterans but there is always need for more, which brings me to my next point—giving back. Following Thanksgiving is #GivingTuesday, a global movement of generosity. I encourage all of you to give back on this day. It can be to any organization with a mission you feel passionate about. You can be a part of inspiring hope in our community.
In that same vein of giving back to local nonprofits, make sure you’re shopping local as well! As you start to buy gifts for the holidays, resist the temptation to go online and spend your money at big, out-of-the-market retailers. There are so many amazing businesses right here in Omaha, many of which are family-owned and have deep roots in Nebraska. Make it a point to celebrate Small Business Saturday this year! Small businesses are the lifeblood of our community. If we want to keep them here, we have to support them. I, of course, encourage the people in my life to do business with the awesome advertisers we have in the magazine. There are too many to name, but they are all special in their own way and they all have different stories. It is such an honor to be a part of telling their stories in an impactful way. I know my team feels the same. We are very thankful for the opportunity to work with so many top-notch people and businesses.
So a big thank you to my clients, my team, and my family and friends who give me support and encouragement. Being a business owner comes with challenges, but all of these people in my life make it worth it. I truly feel blessed when I look around at events or open up the magazine and see all the people who have trusted Strictly Business as a partner. I wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving, and hope each of you takes time to show gratitude to the people around you wherever you may be.
