“The craft cocktail scene is hot right now. Kick it up a notch from your standard beer, wine, and vodka tonic and feature specialty craft cocktails at your event bar. People will love you for it.
Above all, know your audience. Planning a successful client event will depend on your understanding of those who might attend. Do your research and find out if they have any food or beverage preferences. Then surprise them! With existing clients, take note of their preferences and make sure you incorporate them in your next event or encounter. Nailing the small details will make the biggest impact and set you apart from the rest.”

That really says something about the importance of making the time to plan and host an event for your clients. It’s a unique, fun experience, and one that’s not overly complicated or with too many distractions, which can get in the way of the bonding that’s the whole reason behind coming together. Although it might not come to mind first, it’s also an excellent spot to host a Husker football watch party. Especially for those of us in the Omaha area and surrounding cities, we know that a great tailgate party doesn’t always mean a parking lot near Memorial Stadium! The property can be rented for the day with or without the airboat rides, you can bring in your generators, TVs and A/V equipment, and anything else needed for the ultimate tailgate, and make it your own private party spot.”

If there isn’t one already on-site, consider renting one. If you’re putting time, money, and effort into an event, you want everything to be perfect. In Nebraska we have the extremes, which during our open season, are storms and scorchers. Protection from the elements, whether it’s for shelter or shade, will ensure your guests will stay longer and enjoy themselves more. A tent or awning is such a simple thing that surprisingly really does transform the area, and people do tend to gravitate towards those. Paying attention to the details necessary to create the ideal environment is an essential part of entertaining.
Also, keep in mind that there’s usually a reason why things are done a certain way. If you have a creative or wild idea, pass it by the professionals to make sure it will work, because they’ve seen it all – or most of it at least – before. Clients also enjoy having lunch or dinner in the Timber Dining Room or just hanging out in the Library Lounge.
Finding the right setting is critical. You need to know what your clients find enjoyable and beneficial. For example, taking a client to a brewpub and then finding out he/she doesn’t drink beer would be a missed opportunity.
If coming out here isn’t feasible, another option is to ask clients to pick out a favorite restaurant near where they work. This is likely to be a welcomed option for clients with busy schedules. With that in mind, our sales team recently hosted a holiday lunch with several clients at a popular restaurant in their area. It was a big hit and an effective way for us to bring Lied Lodge and Arbor Day Farm to them, while being respectful of their time. I always ask my clients what is of interest to them and how much time they have. And I like to bring something they can take with them. Often, I give clients a tree seedling because it is a gift they can enjoy and share with family and friends.
Entertaining clients is a wonderful way to thank them for their business. It shows you appreciate them, which helps build long-term relationships. It also gives you a chance to show your clients who you are outside of the traditional work environment. The more you know about each other (hobbies, family, etc.), the better the comfort level and trust.”

This type of event provides a casual atmosphere where it’s easy to get to know people. I recommend having games for people to play because they’re a perfect icebreaker — they make it easier for people to interact with one another and have fun. Great food is always important.”
