For any business owner or boss, having great assistants working hard in the field is invaluable. At Unleashed Omaha, owner and head trainer Jaime Lundeby is the boss and he has two loyal, intelligent, assertive–and furry!–assistants. Unleashed Omaha is a pet training business that focuses on implementing behavior modification methods to achieve optimal results. Nico and Dakota–a 7 year old yellow lab and a 3 year old German Shorthair pointer (and a rescue from the NE Humane Society) respectively–actively employ the always-effective strategy of “leading by example.” As Jaime’s assistants, they help their canine students to get past negative behaviors that can occur in real life situations. Together as the Unleashed Omaha team, their goal is to show clients new ways to implement more leadership, guidance, consistency and structure in the lives of their dogs. They also emphasize the importance of their students working hard for everything, which is also a key responsibility of pet owners who want their dog to be well-mannered and on their best behavior at all times–to keep them on track and out of trouble, dogs need jobs too!
Additionally, socialization is an absolute must for dogs! When dogs don’t have the earliest form of socialization, where they learn to behave properly around other dogs and people, it creates problems in many other areas. Prime examples include politely greeting guests, playing nicely, being around toys and food without showing symptoms of aggression, or resisting the urge to create “pecking order” that’s commonly found in the pack world. Practice makes perfect, so Nico and Dakota are around to help by simulating these scenarios in order to correct the unwanted behavior. Each brings their unique personality to the job and can be helpful in different situations; Nico is gentle and engages in light play whereas Dakota is a rough player and very vocal, so sometimes one or the other is best suited for the task at hand depending upon the goal. They also work hard to show dogs that aggression is never an option and to teach them acceptable ways to react to stressors. Learning alternate behaviors (also called counter conditioning) builds confidence that can be life-changing for dogs and their owners, which makes the work that Nico and Dakota do every day pretty darn important!
