While working for a client in another business, Tom Montgomery connected with CoreTech and was impressed by the owners’ candor, their care and respect of clients and their desire to deliver top-notch services. This lead him to join CoreTech, and is now their Director of Virtual CIO Services. CoreTech provides IT support for small and midsize businesses. As an extension of their clients’ staff, CoreTech’s technology experts help businesses meet daily requirements, in addition to strategic technology consulting needs. They also have a division, SecureTech, which provides networked video surveillance and access control, and cloud-based services.

Tell us a little about your family. – My immediate family is my wife, Paula, and son, Ryan. We enjoy giving back to the community as a family and participate in Citizens Patrol. Paula enjoys working with colleagues at Omaha Public Schools and participating in the Ladies Guild at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Ryan is an academic and sports-oriented young man. He is a freshman at Skutt Catholic High School and a member of their basketball team.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – Moving back to Omaha from Minnesota and marrying my wife. The course of my life was changed! I became more concerned about community and family—my life was changed for the better.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Visit the National Parks and boating the lakes of Minnesota with my family!

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I lead a troop of Boy Scouts for a number of years. All the parents and kids are still in touch, and I most recently learned that one of the scouts named his dog after me.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – My father gave me some great advice which Wayne Gretzky encapsulated in these words “You miss 100% of the shots you never take.” My son wrote that quote down for me one day on a post-it which I keep it at my desk.

What is the one goal you would most like to accomplish? – There is a lot of great synergy here at CoreTech. Professionally, my goal is to capture that energy and team work and move this organization toward its fullest potential.

What are your plans after retirement? – Volunteer more in the community, spend time with family, and buy a place in the woods close to a lake!

What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? – My wife is always amazed at how I meet strangers and they share their life story with me. People open up to me for some reason. I think that’s a talent!

Which talent would you most like to have? – The financial wherewithal of Warren Buffett!

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? – I have a couple books cracked open currently. I’m reading one on the US Constitution and the other is a biography of Steve Jobs.

What is your favorite movie? – The Big Chill

What is your favorite TV show? – The Big Bang Theory

What is your favorite local restaurant? – Spezia—their chicken parmesan and salmon dishes are delicious!

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – I would like to have dinner with Nikita Khrushchev. I’m a history buff and would like to find out what occurred during the Cuban missile crises.
