Meet Mike Branigan, Owner of StyleHouse Barbershop (facebook.com).
Tell us a little about your business. – We consider ourselves an old fashioned barbershop that specializes in men’s and boys’ haircuts, where everyone is our friend. We are celebrating our 50 year anniversary this year.
How did you get started in the business? – I went to barber school and graduated in December of 1974. One day, the phone rang at school and I answered. Jerry Pachunka was opening a new shop and I jumped on it, even knowing no income could be promised. One year later, he offered the opportunity to buy in partnership, so then in March of 1976, we became partners. Another opportunity arose in August 1976, and I became sole proprietor. The rest is history.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – The most trying time was during the Covid-19 pandemic. We were shut down for five weeks.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? – I’ve been blessed with a growing community and I am proud to be apart of it. We have a lot of 2nd generation and 3rd generation families that come in. We also have two families of 4th generations that come to the shop, Robert Wasilewski’s family and David Barnes’ family. Getting to know all of the people of the years, watching them and their families grow and building friendships along the way.
Tell us a little about your family. – I have a lovely wife, Joni, five kids and 11 grandchildren. We spend lots of family time together, taking kids around to many sporting events and dance recitals. We have had a Branigan in the Papillion La Vista Public Schools since 1982. We currently have 2 six-year-olds in the district right now
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – My biggest turning point is when I met my wife, Joni. Through her, I became a Christian. We have been married for almost 43 years now.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? -My days off are spent with my kids and grandkids, rooting for Husker football and the Minnesota Vikings.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I am kind of an open book. I love family time, and I trust that Jesus Christ is my Lord and Savior
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – “If I can’t get along with someone for fifteen minutes, it’s my fault.” – Doug Kindig, now La Vista mayor, who was with us for 17 years.
If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? – If I wasn’t cutting hair, I’d probably be coaching football. Wait, I do that every Monday lol.
What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? – Wounded Warriors.
What is your favorite movie? – My favorite movies are Angels in the Outfield, The Sandlot and Rookie of the Year, all of which I introduced to my grandkids when they were little.
