Meet Maggie Dixon, a Quantitative Biosciences Engineer at Huffman Engineering Inc. (huffmaneng.com)

Tell us a little about your business. – Huffman Engineering Inc. (HEI) is a engineering firm that works in engineering services and control system integration. HEI works in a variety of spaces such as water & wastewater, pharmaceuticals & life sciences, food & beverage, manufacturing & material handling, electrical & natural gas utilities & networking data analytics and cybersecurity . Our company tag line is “Making Ideas Work,” and at HEI, we make our client’s ideas a reality, starting with project planning all the way to implementation.

How did you get started in the business? – I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Quantitative Biosciences and Engineering from Colorado School of Mines and connected with Huffman Engineering at our career fair. I was immediately interested in PLC programming because I was taking some computer science classes and enjoyed being able to problem solve.

I interned at HEI after graduating and knew that I wanted to continue my career in Controls Engineering. I started full-time in October 2023. In the past year, I have had opportunities to help with on-site startups, PLC programming, control panel design and SCADA programming; I am looking forward to getting to learn even more!

Tell us a little about your family. – I grew up in Bettendorf, Iowa with my sister and my parents. My dad was the CEO of the family business that my grandpa started, and my mom was a social worker. Now they are retired and living in Florida (and playing lots of pickleball)! My sister recently released a poetry book and is always working on a painting, poems or songs.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – One of the biggest turning points in my life was the end of my senior year of college. I was considering going back to school for a master’s degree but was also eager to enter the workforce. I interned at HEI that summer and knew that I wanted to continue doing controls engineering at HEI as soon as I could. So, I decided to move from Golden, Colorado to Lincoln about a year ago, and I am so thankful for the internship for being such a big turning point in my life.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I love to wake surf and wakeboard! I grew up on a lake and love getting out on the boat for water sports. I recently learned to do a 360 while wake surfing!

If our readers would like to contact you, how should they do so? – Huffman Engineering is headquartered in Lincoln at 5301 North 57th St., but also, we are excited to have just recently opened an office in Omaha. This new office, in addition to our location in Denver, brings us closer to our valued clients in Omaha and opens the doors to help others with their automation needs right here in their backyard.
