How did you get started in the business? (forestlawnomaha.com) – Like many people, a life experience brought me to a career in funeral services. When I was in high school, my younger sister’s best friend took her life, she was like a little sister to me. That turned my life upside down and gave me a different perspective. It drew me into a rabbit hole, exploring different careers in this field. There were many things I know now that I would have not done then – in her services and appearance. Now, during the difficult time when families experience a loss, I am able to be there to guide them, ease the process and bring some type of comfort.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – My start in the funeral service industry began fresh out of high school, at 17 years old. I feel fortunate that someone gave me a chance to pursue this path at that age. I have worked in funeral homes since then. Being so young, and a Hispanic woman, has brought its own challenges, but I have never let that stop me. It just motivates me to continue to be the best I can be.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? – I am proud that I have been able to help as many families as I have. I do not expect them to thank me because they are going through so much. When they do, though, it makes me feel like I am making a difference and that what I am doing does matter. It continues to drive me to be that comfort and peace of mind for every family.
Tell us a little about your family. – My fiancé Alex and I will be getting married in November. We have a fur-baby, Ruger, a 7-year-old boxer that likes to be at the center of attention in our lives.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – When I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my fiancé Alex and our boxer, Ruger. We go on walks and fish together. Alex and I also love trying new food places and going on adventures!
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? – Resilient is the single word that best describes me. Coming from immigrant parents and being so young and career driven, I adapt well to situations and challenges – including recovering from thyroid cancer a few years ago.
What is your favorite local Omaha restaurant? – Pla Too Thai or Yoshitomo are two of our favorite places to go.
