Tell us a little about your business. – Zen (zencoffeecompany.com) is a community-focused coffee shop that started as a dream and grew into multiple locations across Nebraska. Our difference isn’t just the drinks, but the heart behind everything we do. We source thoughtfully, operate as a green business, and create warm, local, and connected spaces. Each shop has its own story, and I’m proud that people walk in and feel known, welcomed, and part of something.

How did you get started in the business? – My first jobs were in coffee, and I loved the pace, the people, and the vibe. I learned operations, customer service, leadership, and eventually realized I wanted my own “Zen” place. On a trip to Cannon Beach, OR, we met our roasting partners and everything aligned. When we found the space at 25th and Farnam, we built Zen from the ground up.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – Leading through unpredictable seasons. Running multiple locations while navigating life, staffing shifts, and changes has pushed me to grow in ways I never expected. It taught me resilience, clarity, and the importance of surrounding myself with the right people.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? – Building a business that truly impacts people. Watching staff grow, seeing customers feel at home, and expanding while staying true to our values has been incredibly meaningful.

Tell us a little about your family. – My husband and I have four wonderful kids who are the heart of everything we do. Life is full, busy, loud, and grounded in faith and support. They’ve grown up alongside the business.

What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – Losing my dad. His influence shows up in how I parent, run Zen, and live life.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Being outside when it’s warm, going to lagree, walking, yoga, sitting on my porch with a coffee, and doing local activities with my kids.

What is something most people don’t know about you? – I spent my childhood summers training for RAGBRAI and doing long-distance bike rides. It taught me endurance, focus, and a love for doing things differently.

Who inspires you? – My friend Amy. She shows up with honesty, encouragement, and grit, and doing small business alongside her has been such a gift.

What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – Best advice: “Ego wants to protect your image. Value wants to protect your purpose.” Choosing value over ego helped me slow down, respond with intention, and stay centered through seasons of growth and challenge.

What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? – Mourning Hope. Grief work is something I deeply value supporting.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? – The Alchemist.

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the pastor present, who would it be? – Stevie Nicks.
