Salvation Army ( is now accepting nominations for the 2023 D.J.’s Hero Awards Scholarships. Select Nebraska high school seniors who have overcome adversity will be chosen to receive the awards, named in honor of the late D.J. Sokol, for commitment to others and to their communities. Honorees will be selected by a panel of metro area civic leaders and this year a minimum of 16 scholarships will be awarded.

Each Hero Awards Scholarship winner will receive a $12,000 scholarship toward their selected college or university. Honorees will be recognized at the D.J.’s Hero Awards event in Omaha on May 9.

Ten $12,000 D.J.’s Hero Scholarships are underwritten by David and Peggy Sokol in loving memory of their son, D.J., who lost his battle with cancer in 1999 at age 18. D.J. is remembered for his passion for life, his engaging sense of humor, and his selfless focus on family, friends, and community. His legacy lives on in the Nebraska high school senior scholarship recipients who demonstrate his resilience and generosity.
