“An apprenticeship exposes you to experiences you don’t get in the classroom,” said Zach Stump, apprentice funeral director at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Cemetery and Mausoleum (forestlawnomaha.com). “It’s nice to learn from people who are in the field about the different aspects of being a funeral director.”
When it comes to preparing for a specialized profession, apprenticeships have grown in popularity with businesses who see the value of providing these experiences to students.
“At Forest Lawn, we believe in contributing to the development of the next generation of students who want to be part of this profession,” said Brian Kruse, executive director for Forest Lawn.
“We provide real-world training in a supportive environment. Our full-service funeral home, cemetery, mausoleum and crematory, provides greater opportunities to learn.”
Stump is earning his degree in the Mortuary Science Program at Des Moines Area Community College through a combination of on-campus and remote learning. The program also allows him to divide his apprenticeship, completing the first six months now and the remainder following graduation.
“I have learned a lot about people and how to adapt my approach to work with them in a way that’s most comfortable for them,” Stump said. “I’ve also learned to step out of my comfort zone and demonstrate the confidence that families want to see at a time when they need support and guidance.”
