November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month. You can help change the lives of homeless youth in Omaha by attending Youth Emergency Services’ annual “Breaking the Cycle” luncheon. The luncheon will be held on Friday, November 6th from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Anthony’s Steakhouse, located at 7220 F Street in Omaha.
Enjoy lunch while listening to our featured speaker, Justin Reed Early, talk about how being homeless as a young teen changed his life. Justin Reed Early is the author of “STREET CHILD: A Memoir” and was homeless for much of his adolescent and teenage years. While dodging serial killers and predators, including a juvenile court judge who oversees his custody, Justin articulates the familial bonds made with other street children while protecting each other in an increasingly dangerous yet invisible world. By telling these authentic stories with oftentimes devastating outcomes, he articulates the stark reality of life on the streets for countless young people. Additionally, Early was a credited participant in the renowned documentary “Streetwise,” which was nominated for an Academy Award (1984).
It is estimated that every night there are more than 300 homeless youth in Omaha. Youth Emergency Services (YES) provides the critically-needed resources that these youth need to become self-sufficient.
