On Monday, January 20, United Way of the Midlands (UWM) (unitedwaymidlands.org) celebrated the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at two special community events. Both events were held at The Venue at the Highlander in North Omaha.

The first event was the Third Annual MLK Day Luncheon, that was provided in partnership with Big Mama’s Kitchen and Catering, Aleece’s Sugar Shoppe, Rib Shack Smokehouse, Black Men United and UWM. The event included a special program featuring Wayne Brown, president and CEO of the Urban League of Nebraska, and a free fried chicken meal for those in attendance.

In recognition of the National Day of Service, the day continued with a MLK Day Volunteer Event. During the event, presented by UWM’s Good on the Go program, community volunteers assembled nearly 2,000 snack pack kits for Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands, Bright Minds, Empowerment Network and You Turn. With close to 70 volunteers pitching in, this event helped make a tangible impact for members of the Omaha-Council Bluffs metro.

“We were so excited to join forces with many of our nonprofit partners, local businesses and community members to honor Dr. King’s work and celebrate the impact of service,” said Shawna Forsberg, president and CEO, UWM. “Volunteerism has the power to unite us, create meaningful change and strengthen the fabric of our community, embodying Dr. King’s vision of a better world. We are deeply grateful to our generous sponsors Fiserv, KPMG, McGrath North and NP Dodge for their dedication to making a difference and for supporting the day’s activities.”
