Little Leaf Learning Center (mylittleleaf.org) has received a $25,000 grant from the Karnett Trust, administered by United Way of the Midlands (UnitedWayMidlands.org), to support its early education classroom program for children with intellectual disabilities.
The funding will help Little Leaf provide small-group early education classes, addressing current needs such as classroom supplies, technology upgrades and general operational expenses. This includes utilities, cleaning supplies and professional development opportunities for staff, including training like the National Down Syndrome Conference.
Little Leaf Learning Center offers a research-based curriculum tailored to children with Down syndrome, focusing on early intervention to improve bone density, balance, speech and life skills such as problem-solving and personal hygiene. The program also supports families by providing resources and advocacy guidance.
The grant review process involved local volunteers who recognized the essential services Little Leaf provides to children and families with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the community.
Through standardized assessments and coordinated occupational and speech therapies, Little Leaf delivers personalized support designed to empower each child. The program’s comprehensive approach uses tools like the Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales to measure progress.
