Project Harmony’s Connections Program Gains Community Support in 1st Year
Project Harmony’s Connections program launched in January 2015 with the goal of linking schools and families with quality mental health and counseling services. The program was created in response to the need identified through the state’s child abuse hotline, which is also located at Project Harmony. Project Harmony’s strong desire of becoming more proactive in dealing with child abuse and family crisis led to Connections, and both the public’s response and the program’s results have been overwhelmingly positive in its first year.
This program, designed specifically for children in grades Kindergarten through eighth grade, is now currently offered in the Millard and Papillion-La Vista schools as well as 27 Omaha Public Schools. Guidance counselors or medical professionals refer families, with the family’s consent, to Connections when signs of mental health or trauma symptoms are identified. Signs of concern include:
• Mood problems • Anxiety • Sleep problems • Family stress
• Family or community violence • School behavior or attention problems
• Inattention or impulsivity • Nightmares • Irritability
• Difficulty concentrating • Dissociation
