Open Door Mission has been celebrating its 60th year of service to the Omaha Metropolitan area since November 1, 2014. As the 60th year comes to a close, Open Door Mission has plans to commemorate its anniversary with a host of activities to honor the organization’s major milestone.

On August 24th, Mayor Jean Stothert encouraged the citizens of Omaha to express compassion and concern for the poor and homeless, setting her seal to proclaim Sunday, November 1, 2015 Open Door Mission Day. On that date, the Woodmen Tower in downtown Omaha will be lit purple in honor of Open Door Mission Day. Following on November 2nd, Chick-fil-A Bellevue will offer a special to customers in honor of Open Door Mission Day. To conclude the festivities, Open Door Mission will host its “60 Years of Blessings” Gala on November 12th at 7 p.m. at the Hilton Omaha Downtown, featuring legendary coach Bobby Bowden.

Fueled by faith, guided by vision for an evangelical mission, and assisted by Pastor Jerry Dunn, Garland Thompson founded Open Door Mission in the Ballenger Building at 13th and Douglas Streets on November 1, 1954. Currently, each day, Open Door Mission provides 816 men, women, and children with safe shelter beds, serves more than 2,000 hot nutritious meals, and provides preventative measures to more than 275 families living in poverty.
