Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert will proclaim February 5 as National Girls and Women in Sports Day, marking the highlight of EPIC for Girls’ (epicforgirls.org) “Lead HER Forward Sports Week.” The week-long celebration, running January 31–February 8, empowers and celebrates girls and women in sports through events featuring local collegiate and professional teams.
Community members can attend games, clinics and meet-and-greet events at venues like Creighton University, the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Bellevue University and SET The Bar. Activities include raffles with exclusive prizes such as signed memorabilia from the LOVB Omaha Team, Dawn Staley and Jordan Chiles, as well as swag from Bellevue University and the College of Saint Mary.
“Our goal is to create opportunities for girls to see themselves in sports as leaders and changemakers,” said Kimberly Thomas, EPIC for Girls’ executive director. “We are especially committed to increasing access for girls of color, ensuring they have the support to thrive in athletics and beyond.”
