On February 11, United Way of the Midlands (UWM) (UnitedWayMidlands.org) recognized National 211 Day, celebrating the impact of this nationwide network – while highlighting the essential services UWM’s 211 Helpline provides across Nebraska and Iowa. As part of this system, the 211 Helpline serves as a vital local resource, helping individuals and families in their region navigate challenges and find support.
In 2024 alone, UWM’s 211 Helpline responded to more than 275,000 contacts – with housing, utility assistance, income assistance, food and transportation ranking as the top five needs.
Connected to more than 4,000 agencies and 10,000 programs across Nebraska and Iowa, the 211 Helpline provides multiple points of access for those looking to receive assistance easily and confidentially. Through UWM211.org, individuals can access an online database of local health and human service programs, community services, governmental programs and more.
Individuals can also access resources by texting their ZIP code to 898211 or dialing 2-1-1 to speak directly with a trained 211 Community Resource Specialist. Free and confidential assistance is available 24/7, 365 days a year, in more than 240 languages using the tele-interpreter service and bilingual staff.
“The 211 Helpline provides connections and support for those who need help and don’t know where to turn,” said Shawna Forsberg, president and CEO, United Way of the Midlands. “On 211 Day, we wanted to express our gratitude to all of our Community Resource Specialists for the work they do, and also celebrate this lifeline that is helping thousands of our neighbors in need every single day.”
