Since opening its first Omaha location eight years ago, Life.Church has invested in helping people find hope, healing, and a fresh start through strategic partnerships with local nonprofits. Through volunteer service and more than $285,000 in grants, Life.Church has supported organizations across the metro that help veterans, strengthen families, and assist individuals overcoming addiction and homelessness.
One of those organizations is Open Door Mission (opendoormission.org), which has been serving Omaha’s most vulnerable neighbors over 71 years with emergency shelter, addiction recovery programs, and long-term life transformation services.
Since 2020, Life.Church and Open Door Mission have partnered to help hundreds of men and women rebuild their lives and discover lasting hope. One of those lives is Joel’s.
Joel’s life appeared successful from the outside, but addiction had quietly followed him for decades. After the end of his marriage and the sudden loss of his mother, his life began to unravel. He lost his career, his finances, and ultimately his freedom, spending time in jail.
When Joel was released, he arrived at Open Door Mission with little more than a Bible, a nearly dead cell phone, and twenty-five cents in his pocket.
Through Open Door Mission’s New Life Recovery Program, Joel found accountability, purpose, and a path forward. Today, he has been sober for more than three years, is remarried, and serves on staff at Open Door Mission, helping others find the same hope he discovered.
