Canopy South (canopysouth.org) in partnership with Omaha Performing Arts hosted Global Sounds on June 24 from noon to 10 p.m. at Upland Park. The inaugural free music festival showcased the incredible talent of both local and national artists, provided a platform for local vendors and nonprofit exhibitors and highlighted a variety of ethnic food trucks. After Tito Puente Jr. performed, they ended the night with a mesmerizing firework show!

The success of Global Sounds would not have been possible without the support of sponsors and partners. These partnerships have not only helped Canopy South make a lasting impact on the community, but have also played a vital role in promoting cultural diversity, unity, enhancing community vibrancy and providing an unforgettable experience to over 1,000 attendees.

Canopy South is the nonprofit organization leading the holistic revitalization of neighborhoods in south Omaha by implementing a multifaceted approach by developing mixed-income housing, supporting education, enhancing community vibrancy and increasing economic mobility. Over the next six years, Southside Terrace – the largest public housing site in the state of Nebraska (30 acres, 359 units) – will be demolished in phases. In partnership with the Omaha Housing Authority and the City of Omaha, over 750 mixed-income units will be developed. Roughly one third will serve as replacement units for public housing residents, one third will be affordable, while the remaining one third will be rented at market rate.
