Summer break means school is out, but for working families, the need for childcare and support continues. Each summer, Completely KIDS serves hundreds of youth through engaging summer programming that keeps KIDS connected, entertained and active. Among those offerings is Camp Hero, a specialized program designed for children who benefit from a more supportive and individualized environment.

Created for youth navigating life transitions with higher support needs, including many on the autism spectrum, Camp Hero provides a structured summer experience focused on emotional wellness, confidence building and connection.

Completely KIDS launched Camp Hero in summer 2023 with just 10 participants. Now entering its fourth summer, the program has expanded to serve up to 24 youth currently enrolled in Completely KIDS after-school programs.

What sets Camp Hero apart is its tailored approach. While traditional summer programs may operate with staff-to-student ratios of 1:15, Camp Hero maintains a 1:3 ratio, ensuring each child gets individualized attention. The program also incorporates movement and sensory breaks and includes daily skills-based mental health groups that help youth identify emotions and strengthen self-regulation skills.

“Camp Hero reflects our commitment to meeting youth where they are because one size does not fit all,” said Lulu Rangel, LICSW, LIMHP, Clinical Director at Completely KIDS. “By creating a smaller, more responsive environment, we help youth build confidence and develop skills that extend beyond the summer.”

Camp Hero is one example of how Completely KIDS adapts programming to meet the diverse needs of youth and families so more children can continue growing and thriving all summer long. For more information, visit completelykids.org.
