Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands Makes Mentorship a New Year’s Resolution
As the clock ticks towards 2019, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of the Midlands (www.MentorOmaha.org) encourages the community to consider being a mentor for their New Year’s resolution. We all want our resolutions to either help ourselves or those around us, but what if we could do both? Volunteering is a fantastic way to better yourself while helping others.
Volunteering, specifically with young people, has tremendous benefits for both you and the youth you mentor. BBBS of the Midlands has over 100 kids waiting to share the benefit of mentoring with you. These kids exhibit higher self-confidence, better attendance in school, and a decrease in risky behavior. That’s a win for the community.
BBBS volunteers are often quoted as saying, “I feel like I get more out of it than the kids do.” Volunteers report feeling like they have more time, develop new skills, and feel healthier physically. The impact of volunteering is significant in the business community, as well. Employees who volunteer have higher retention rates, feel more connected to their work, and develop new skills, while also making it easier to recruit new potential employees.
If you are thinking of reducing the time you spend on social media or cutting out unhealthy behaviors, replace that time with something that helps you and your local community.
