It’s a milestone moment for any young person: Walking out of the DMV with a piece of paper saying you’re now a certified driver.

On May 16, Avenue Scholars made many of these moments possible at their DMV Day event. Here, Scholars had the opportunity to visit the DMV to test for and obtain their driver’s license, learner’s permit or state ID – with all costs covered.

The event was made possible through a grant from the AAA Auto Club Group (ACG) Foundation, which supported the filing costs of every Scholar seeking an ID, permit or license, and, for many, the cost of driver’s education courses.

“Transportation is truly a pillar of our program – being able to get yourself to and from work is crucial in the professional world,” said Lindsay Decker, CEO of Avenue Scholars.

For at least one Scholar who attended DMV Day, that was especially true. Aiden, a rising junior at Bellevue East High School who left the event with his license, hopes to be a CDL driver one day.

“It’s kind of the open road – that freedom, I’d say,” he said.
