JDRF Announces Notable Dates for National Diabetes Awareness Month

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults suddenly when your pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone the body needs to get energy from food. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. People with T1D are dependent on injected or pumped insulin to survive.

JDRF (jdrf.org/Omaha), the leading global organization funding T1D research, invites the Omaha/Council Bluffs Metro area community to join in commemorating National Diabetes Awareness Month by raising awareness of T1D and the urgent need to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat T1D and its complications. The JDRF Omaha-Council Bluffs Chapter has a range of activities and events to engage the local community during the month-long campaign.

  • November 1 – WoodmenLife Tower and Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge will be lit blue for Type 1 Diabetes Day.
  • November 3 – JDRF night with the Mavs. UNO Hockey and Miami-Ohio will wear “JDRF/T1D” helmet decals during the game.
  • November 11 – JDRF TypeOneNation Summit, FREE seminar for education and connection, at the Scott Conference Center from 1–5 p.m.
  • November 14 – WoodmenLife Tower and Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge will be lit blue for World Diabetes Day.
  • November 18 – JDRF night with Lancers. Omaha Lancers will wear “JDRF/T1D” helmet decals during the game.
