Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed medical procedures in the world. In the traditional, non-laser approach, the surgeon must perform the initial surgical steps manually, using handheld instruments and a scalpel blade. Utilizing femtosecond laser technology, such as the CATALYS® laser system, surgeons such as Dr. Lance Kugler can now analyze a cataract patient’s eye biology using Three Dimensional imaging, and program customized treatments into the computer-guided laser, reducing the manual steps of cataract surgery. The result is the surgeon’s ability to access and remove the cataract with accuracy that is approximately 10 times greater than that that achieved with traditional, manual techniques. Additionally, correction of astigmatism is now possible utilizing the CATALYS® laser during cataract surgery.
