Nebraska Department of Labor Offers Short-Time Compensation Program to Businesses
The Nebraska Department of Labor (dol.nebraska.gov) is offering businesses the opportunity to participate in a program to help them retain their workforce during a temporary slowdown in work. The Short-Time Compensation (STC) program allows employers to voluntarily reduce the hours of staff in lieu of layoffs. Employees of the business are allowed to receive a partial unemployment benefit to help them offset the loss of income.
Companies whose STC plans are approved continue to provide the usual health and retirement benefits to any employee whose weekly hours of work are reduced under STC. The employees’ hours must be reduced by at least 10%, but not more than 60%. The maximum duration of an STC plan is 13 months.
Employers with STC plans certify each week the hours worked by employers who fall under the plan. Employees must also file for unemployment benefits each week in order to receive payments.
