Gross Catholic Celebrates 50 Years of Leadership and Faith

50 years ago, the Archdiocese of Omaha, with the help of generous donors Daniel and Louise Gross, built Gross Catholic High School (grosscatholic.org) to meet the critical need for Catholic education in Sarpy County and south Omaha. Archbishop Gerald T. Bergan invited priests and brothers from the Society of Mary and the Franciscan Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help to assist in creating the Gross Catholic community. Brother Leo Willett, S.M., the first principal, opened the school on September 3, 1968, with a freshman class of 175 students. The Class of 1972 graduated on May 28, 1972, and became the first of more than 8,300 alumni.

To commemorate this historic event, Gross Catholic hosted a special Homecoming celebration September 14-17. Weekend festivities included a pre-game tailgate for the entire family before the Homecoming football game; a free Alumni gathering with live bands, a bonfire, and food and drinks at the Bellevue Berry; a breakfast with the Pancake Man and school tours; and the Cougar Classic Golf Outing at Eagle Hills Golf Course.

As one of Nebraska’s premier private schools, Gross Catholic High School is a faith and family-based community committed to developing Christian leaders through academic excellence in the Marianist tradition.
