Elkhorn’s Main Street Studios Presents Nebraska’s First Snow Sculpting Competition

Elkhorn’s Main Street Studios & Art Gallery (www.mainstreetstudios2610.com) is teaming up with Omaha artist and engineer Matt Seeley for Nebraska’s first Snow Sculpting Competition on February 8–10. Friday and Saturday’s events will last from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday’s festivities will start at 10 a.m. and wrap up around 4 p.m. This event will host many larger-than-life pro exhibitions from across the nation and local teams competing in sanctioned events, as well as food, drinks, and Nebraska’s only Ice Bar.

In preparation for the competition, Seeley will hook up his antique snow machine to a nearby fire hydrant. As the propeller blades spin it will blast a cloud of dense, man-made snow over a vacant lot in Elkhorn (2610 N Main St.). The snow will then be gathered and molded into rock-solid 4 x 4 x 8-foot blocks.

The competition will consist of a handful of 2–3 person teams, of all skill levels, from national teams to amateur teams sanctioned by Nebraska, who will work to scrape, carve, and shave the blocks of snow into dazzling art displays. The first-place finisher will have the chance to represent the Cornhusker State at the 2020 United States National Snow Sculpting Championship, held in Lake Geneva, WI.

Main Street Studios & Gallery is located historic downtown Elkhorn. They have two large gallery spaces, as well as numerous in-house art studios. Keep up with their events by visiting their website at www.mainstreetstudios2610.com, or call the studio at (402) 452-3088.
