Meet Kim Rowell, Vice President at Cox Communications (cox.com).
Tell us a little about your business. – Cox Communications is the Technology and Telecommunications entity of Cox Enterprises, a fourth generation family owned and run business. At Cox, we’re empowering our people today to build a better future for the next generation. This statement is the guiding principle for all Cox employees and is ingrained in our culture and demonstrated daily by employees. The enterprise consists of Cox Automotive (Kelly Blue Book, Manheim Auto Auctions, Autotrader, Fleet Services and EV Battery Solutions), Cox Communications (Cox Business, Segra/UPN (Unite Private Networks), RapidScale, and Hospitality Networks) and Cox Farms, a just announced new business focused on sustainable food and agriculture (Mucci Farms and BrightFarms).
How did you get started in the business? – My undergraduate degree is in Electrical Engineering. The semester prior to graduation I had four job offers. At the time, I chose the offer and company that provided the most diversity of roles, the greatest potential for growth and opportunity was based in technology and was well established and financially stable.
Tell us a little about your family. – My husband Bill and I have been happily married for 30 years. While we were not blessed with children, we have five amazing nieces, two great nephews and two great nieces that are an integral part of our life.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – It’s a mixed bag — I love to read, organize/simplify things in the home – it’s cathartic for me, anything out of doors, yoga and pilates.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – My favorite quote is by Dr. Maya Angelou, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I try and live by this quote.
If you could have a super power, what would it be? – I would like to be able to teleport. I love to travel and visit friends and family. Sometimes, the travelling “to and from” is tedious and can be tiring. Teleporting, would lessen the stress and give you more time for the relevant activities, visiting with friends and family and experiencing the adventures of the location.
If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? – Either a teacher or health care professional. Both professions require selflessness, a view greater than your own, compassion, continual learning and a connection with the individual. For both, you are ultimately giving of yourself and providing for the greater good.
What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? – NorthStar Foundation. Their mission is to change young men’s lives through programming that supports, challenges, inspires and instills a life rooted in education, self-discipline and service to the community. Their mission, along with the Executive Director, Scott Hazelrigg and the entire team’s dedication to and passion for the mission are creating successful outcomes for many young men and their families thereby bettering communities.
