Meet Tessa Yeo, editor and writer at Strictly Business.
Tell us a little about your business. – Strictly Business is a local news and direct marketing magazine in Omaha and Lincoln that is strong in print and online. We are all about branding names and faces because people like to do business with people they know, like, and trust. With over 29 years of experience, we are proud of our reputation as a reliable and positive publication and grateful for the opportunity to promote so many amazing local businesses and organizations each month.
How did you get started in the business? – I graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in May of this year with a degree in advertising and public relations. I got to experience a lot of different aspects of the advertising and journalism world while at school, so I was definitely hoping that I would find the right fit for me. I spent the summer looking for jobs, and Strictly Business just felt like the perfect place to start my career.
Tell us a little about your family. – I have three siblings, along with my dad and stepmom. We are all spread out across the country. My sisters live in Portland and Phoenix, my stepbrother lives in Nashville, and my parents can be found in the Orlando area. Both of my sisters got married this year, so it has been an exciting year for our family.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – I am a homebody so I love to watch movies, but I am always down to hang out with my friends and go to concerts or musicals in the area.
Who inspires you? – My sisters. I am the youngest of my siblings and seeing my sisters achieve their goals and follow their ambitions has always been inspiring. I am grateful for their guidance and friendship every day.
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be? – Original.
If you had a theme song, what would it be? – “Turn Up The Sunshine” by Diana Ross and Tame Impala.
If you could have a super power, what would it be? – The ability to freeze time. I think we could all use that every now and then.
What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? – I love to sing! Music is a big part of my life.
Which talent would you most like to have? – A good sense of direction. I need navigation to get most places.
If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? – I would love to work on a reality competition show in some way. I love watching them, so I think it would be fun to see everything that happens behind the scenes. There are so many different personalities that end up on reality shows, and it would be interesting to see how they actually act before the magical TV editing.
What local nonprofit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? – I have gotten the chance to learn about so many nonprofits in the area because of Strictly Business. I believe giving back to the community is a huge way to really feel connected to those around you and motivated to make our area a better place for everyone, no matter what they are going through.
What is your favorite movie? – The Lego Movie.
What is your favorite TV show? – Grey’s Anatomy.
What is your favorite local restaurant? – Hiro 88.
