River City Six – Dr. Kelly Schroeder
Meet Dr. Kelly Schroeder, a board-certified vein doctor and owner of Venus Vein Clinic.
Tell us a little about your business.
Venus Vein Clinic is a full-service vein clinic where men and women can come for a comfortable experience to get relief from their leg discomfort.
How did you get started in the business?
I worked for many years as an Emergency Room (ER) department doctor. I would see patients repeatedly for the same vein conditions—swelling, pain, infections, bleeding, and wounds. I would send them to specialists, trusting they would get the care they needed, but inevitably, my patients would return to the ER for recurrent complications. When I researched the problem, it was clear that there is poor understanding and follow through with regards to treatment of vein conditions in our community. I knew I could make a difference, so I set out to complete my training for the Venous and Lymphatics specialty. I opened Venus Vein Clinic because I want to create an experience for my patients that is both caring and comfortable.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?
Balance. It’s difficult to find that perfect recipe for balancing life, career, and rest.
What has been your most important achievement professionally?
Opening Venus Vein Clinic is more than just a small business to me. This gives me the ability to give the best care I can, in the best atmosphere I can, with the best support I can. I always felt like the clinics, hospitals, and administrations I worked for previously limited how care could be delivered. Now, I get to give my patients every benefit possible, and it is so gratifying.
Tell us a little about your family.
I’m married with two daughters and two sons. My husband is also a physician. Our children are very active and very different from one another, so we are often doing several kinds of activities on any given day. My family works hard and plays hard. We spend a lot of time together, whether it’s with our pets, being outside, or just laughing and talking.
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life?
Our youngest son has had a transplant. This changed us all. My son and I now share a pair of kidneys between us. As a turning point in life, I’d say this has grown my family closer, more compassionate, and more loving. For me personally, it has been, hands down, the hardest, saddest, happiest, and greatest achievement in my life.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know?
I enjoy new experiences. If I have a choice between two things, I will always choose the one that I’ve never chosen before.
What is your favorite quote or the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.” – Henry Ford.
If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be?
If I did it all over again, I wouldn’t be anything different than the doctor I am today.
What is your favorite movie?
I don’t watch too much TV or movies, but I do love musicals. Live performances are much more my preference. I’ll never miss a classic like Phantom of the Opera when it comes to town.
What is your favorite local restaurant?
Flat Iron Café.
