Children’s Respite Care Center (CRCC) is a local, independent nonprofit organization that has served the Omaha community for 24 years. Licensed as both a Children’s Day Health Service and a specialized childcare center, CRCC provides comprehensive services to children and adolescents who have medical, developmental and behavior challenges. Their staff of nurses, teachers and therapists provides quality, coordinated care to help each child achieve their maximum potential in two Omaha locations. Terri Fitzgerald is the President and CEO of Children’s Respite Care Center.

How did you get started in the business? – My sister and I recognized an unmet need in the Omaha community for providing specialized services to children whose needs couldn’t be met in typical care environments. We each possessed skill sets that complimented each other and were necessary to create and sustain a sound business, so our partnership made sense and together we created CRCC.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally? – In 1988, starting an organization with what was considered a unique business model and the lack of community awareness of not only the need, but the purpose of the organization.

What has been your most important achievement professionally? – Leading and growing the organization from Day One; the longevity of some of the most dedicated, talented employees any leader could ask for; and being a small part of helping hundreds of families achieve their goals.

What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – An unrushed workout at the gym, curling up with a book, or preparing a fabulous dish.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – Dancing has been part of my life since age 6. I have enjoyed choreographing musical productions.

What are you the most proud of? – Successfully raising, along with my husband, two beautiful, accomplished, giving daughters.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – From my dad:  There is no I in the word TEAM; stay true to yourself and defend your principles.

If you had a theme song, what would it be? – “I Hope You Dance” by LeeAnn Womack. It’s about living life, optimism, humility, and leaning into the wind when facing adversity. “When you get the chance to sit it out or dance”…I’ve chosen to dance!

If you could have a super power, what would it be? – The power to heal.

Which talent would you most like to have? – Speed reading.

What is your favorite book or the last good book you read? – Lincoln on Leadership: Executive Strategies for Tough Times by Donald T. Phillips.

What is your favorite local restaurant? – Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano

If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – Abraham Lincoln.  I would like to discuss how he crafted his responses to both people and situations.
