A master of the butcher block in Omaha for 55 years and counting, Just Good Meat is the place to find the finest quality beef, chicken, pork and seafood in Omaha today. The store, located on 84th Street between L and F Streets, also prides itself in offering a full line of award-winning sausages, exotic and smoked meats, homemade deli items, fresh sandwiches and foods ranging from Chili to BBQ meats. Catering services were also recently added to the line-up of products and services offered by Just Good Meat. Jason Funk is part of the management team at Just Good Meat.
Tell us a little about your business. – We are an old-fashioned meat store that takes pride in offering great customer service and we’ve had the pleasure of assisting over a million customers in the Omaha community since 1959.
How did you get started in the business? – I moved back from Arizona in 1995. My mother was working at Just Good Meat at the time and told me they were looking to fill a position, and I ended up being the guy for the job.
What has been your most important achievement professionally? – My longevity with the company.
Tell us a little about your family. – I have a big happy family. My daughter and four sons definitely keep me busy!
What do you see as one of the biggest turning points in your life? – The day I had my daughter Cameron, who is now 17 years old, and more recently getting her ready for college.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off? – Spending time with my family doing fun activities.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know? – I play the drums. Also, that I have a very witty sense of humor that goes above most people’s heads.
What are you the most proud of? – Watching the way my children are growing into adults.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? – Be yourself.
If you had a theme song, what would it be? – “The Humbling River” by Puscifer. The band also shares the same lead singer as my favorite band TOOL, Maynard James Keenan.
If you could have a super power, what would it be? – Why pick one? I’d like super speed, super power, and I’d like to fly.
What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life? – None, I use all of my talents at work…that’s why everything runs so smoothly, right?
Which talent would you most like to have? – I’m a pretty good drummer, but I’d like to be legendary.
If you could choose any other profession to be successful in, what would it be? – An architect.
What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why? – I’m not involved with any particular organization specifically, but feeding the homeless is very important to me and I help out wherever and whenever I can.
What is your favorite movie? – Most recently, it’s Vacation.
What is your favorite TV show? – Anything with Gordon Ramsay.
What is your favorite local restaurant? – 801 Chophouse.
If you could have dinner with one famous person from the past or present, who would it be? – Danny Carey, the drummer for TOOL.
