River City Six – Guy Rudloff
Meet Guy Rudloff, project manager for Xcel Roofing (www.loveourroof.com) in Omaha.
Tell us a little about your business.
Xcel is a local roofing and restoration company that started in 1990. We work with residential and commercial clients, specializing in roofing, windows, siding, gutters, decks, and interior repairs. In 2018, we received the BBB Integrity Award. Along with integrity, we believe in strong customer service, the highest quality workmanship, being an innovator in our industry, and giving back to the communities we serve.
How did you get started in the business?
I’ve been in advertising, sales, and marketing for the majority of my career. I launched my own marketing, media, and event business when I moved back from Chicago. It is going really well, but I’m the kind of person who is always looking for a bigger challenge. Matt Preister had been trying to recruit me to work with him at Xcel. Matt and Jim Harding are the owners of Xcel and I was really impressed with the way they ran the company. I started last year and it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced professionally?
Learning an entirely new business. The client service, communication, and accountability is easy to duplicate, but the terminology and industry information took some time to understand. Thank goodness for the Xcel training program and countless hours of YouTube videos.
What has been your most important achievement professionally?
I left a job selling radio advertising for five stations in Kansas City and moved to Chicago to oversee national sales for 132 stations. It was a huge challenge, both personally and professionally. I spent 17 years in Chicago and still miss it, but I am very happy to be back home in Omaha.
What is your favorite thing to do on a day off?
Depends on the weather. If it’s nice outside, I enjoy exploring the small towns outside of Omaha or spending time on the water. If it’s cold outside, I like to come up with unique and fun events to enjoy with my friends.
Who inspires you?
My mom was always a great inspiration to me. Coming from a single-parent home, I watched her sacrifice in order to take care of our family. It taught me to work hard, share success, and live within my means.
If you could choose only one descriptive word to be remembered as, what would it be?
If you had a theme song, what would it be?
“Lose Yourself” by Eminem.
If you could have a super power, what would it be?
The ability to heal others, both humans and animals.
What is your greatest talent that you don’t utilize in your daily work life?
I really enjoy writing, mostly short-form humor and lifestyle reporting. I have written for several local publications over the years and plan to start up again.
What local non-profit organization(s) are you passionate about or involved with, and are there any special reasons why?
I am very proud to be involved with Mustaches For Kids Omaha, a group of men who grow mustaches for 30 days to raise money for a local charity.
What is your favorite movie?
My top three would probably be Princess Bride, Shawshank Redemption, and Love Actually.
What is your favorite local restaurant?
I really like J. Coco and Modern Love.
