Fernando “Butch” Lecuona, the executive director of the Community Education Foundation, was recognized nationally by the American Schools Foundation Alliance in its recent bi-monthly newsletter.  Lecuona was named to the alliance’s honor roll, which was accompanied by an interview with Nancy Dye.  She focused on asking him about the Council Bluffs foundation’s successful programs and his recommendations for other school foundations and their directors.

Since arriving at the foundation in 2009, Lecuona has organized it into four business units:  the foundation itself, which serves as the umbrella organization for its programs; the Kids & Co. before and after school care program; the Council Bluffs Alumni Association, which recently hired its own alumni director; and the STARS Scholar program, which helps adults living in Pottawattamie County earn job certificates, associate degrees and bachelor’s degrees.

The Community Education Foundation also sponsors programs for students in need, a classroom teacher grant program, the Council Bluffs Community School District’s teacher and staff recognition programs, annual awards, attendance incentives and 30 scholarships for high school seniors graduating from the school district

Lecuona was glad to have the opportunity to share how the foundation differs from many school foundations across the country and was honored to be named and featured in the newsletter.
