The Latino Center of the Midlands (LCM) is pleased to announce its recent grant award from the City of Omaha to support the Pathways to Success (P2S) program’s anti-truancy prevention efforts at South High School. The City of Omaha Council voted to approve $150,000 in grants In February of 2015. The City also awarded grants to the D2 Center and the Urban League of Nebraska to support their own truancy-prevention activities. At the Latino Center of the Midlands, the P2S program aims to reduce chronic school absenteeism and incidence of risky behaviors in high school youth and currently works with 52 students at South High School.
The 2012-2015 Douglas County Comprehensive Juvenile Services Plan states that truancy is a priority area to address in the region. While much data has been gathered and systematic solutions enacted, excessive absenteeism still remains a challenge in the metro area. The Pathways to Success program also provides services to students and families at Bryan High School and Bellevue West High School. Students are referred to the P2S program through referrals made by counselors, social workers, teachers and administrators. Each Student Advocates works with 35-40 students and their families.
