Momentum From Spotlight Aligns With Vision of Project Harmony
Spotlight took best picture at the 88th Academy Awards. The film covers the investigative reporting of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team in exposing the cover-up of sexual abuse. Project Harmony (www.projectharmony.com) is an organization committed to empowering adults to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Yet, despite our daily exposure to the issue, talking about this movie is difficult.
This movie is not about a problem that happened in the past. It’s a problem that is still happening today and it can happen anywhere. One out of 10 children is sexually abused before their 18th birthday. This means that in any classroom or neighborhood full of children, there are children who are silently bearing the burden of sexual abuse. Whether you work with youth, are a parent or are simply a member of a community – it is highly likely that someone you know and care for has experienced, or is currently experiencing, child sexual abuse.
Spotlight should open our eyes to sexual abuse and the tendency of society to cover it up at the expense of our children. Let’s continue to educate ourselves and commit to ending child sexual abuse so it can be a thing of the past. Register for a Darkness to Light: Stewards of Children at Project Harmony and be someone in the life of a child. 2016 dates include June 1, September 13 and December 7. This training uses real people and real stories to show you how to protect the children you love from the unsettling statistics. To find out more, contact Angela Roeber at (402) 595-1326 Ext. 254.
