On February 5th, homeless students living on Open Door Mission Campus were honored and praised for their academic and character achievements during a special program at the Garland Thompson Men’s Center.

The evening began with a musical performance by the Omaha Central Jazz Band followed by a pizza party provided by Southwest Kiwanis for all families living at Lydia House. Afterwards, students received awards from Joel Cota representing the Mayor’s Office and Dr. Jerry Bartee, Assistant Superintendent of Omaha Public Schools.

Children who are homeless face a greater risk of repeating their current grade. Parents of most of the children receiving recognition are enrolled in Open Door Mission’s New Life Recovery Program or Journey to Work Program. These are cutting-edge programs designed to rescue families from devastating circumstances and restore them into a healthy, independent-living environment.

Open Door Mission is a Gospel Rescue Mission that provides 816 men, women, and children with safe shelter beds, serves more than 2,000 hot nutritious meals, and provides preventive measures to more than 275 families living in poverty. Open Door Mission offers life-changing programs for those recovering from life-altering addictions and abuse to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty.  For more information about Open Door Mission, please call (402) 422-1111 or visit opendoormission.org.
