As Omaha looks to strengthen its economy and retain homegrown talent, one initiative stands out as a catalyst: Step-Up Omaha (stepupomaha.com). By connecting youth to early career opportunities, Step-Up invests in the next generation while helping secure a strong, local workforce.
Since 2008, Step-Up Omaha has supported more than 9,500 young people aged 14 to 21 in gaining meaningful work experience, earning income and developing essential life and leadership skills. Through partnerships with nearly 100 employers, Step-Up offers hands-on exposure to diverse career paths. This lays a strong foundation for long-term career growth.
According to the Greater Omaha Chamber’s Business Retention & Expansion survey, workforce availability is a top concern for local companies. Early exposure to professional environments increases the likelihood that young people will remain in their communities. Step-Up strengthens Omaha’s talent pipeline, with many alumni returning as interns, full-time employees or even employers.
Supported by a collaborative network of funders and partners, Step-Up is an investment in Omaha’s future. The initiative receives support from partners like the City of Omaha and the Charles E. Lakin Foundation. Another supportive partner is the Obama Foundation’s My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Alliance, a program that seeks to positively shift outcomes for boys and young men of color in Omaha through the implementation of evidence-based practices, which address six MBK milestones during a young person’s life.
