Throughout the year and during Hunger Awareness Month in September, Heartland Family Service raises awareness and combats the growing problem of food insecurity. Heartland Family Service is responding to the need in our community for regular access to healthy meals through their Child & Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Through this USDA-funded program, Heartland Family Service staff visit child care homes to educate providers about healthy nutrition through a six-part training and provide the support providers need to make healthy changes in their child care. CACFP staff also analyze the child care menus on a monthly basis and reimburse providers for all the meals they serve that fall within the USDA guidelines. In July 2014 alone, Heartland Family Service reimbursed day care providers in the Omaha metro area for 72,763 meals and snacks for 2,159 children through CACFP.
