The exposition If You Build It: Omaha’s Urban Design recently opened at The Durham Museum on June 14 and will remain on display until March 1, 2015. Through images and objects from The Durham Museum Collection, learn the story of the changing faces of Omaha. If You Build It examines Omaha’s urban planning history and how past decisions affect our everyday lives.

Museum visitors will learn how Omaha became a city crucial to the success of the American West and how the following 160 years it has brought growth and evolution. A highlight of the exhibit includes project renderings and a 3D model of the Green in the City park project from Omaha by Design. The displays are from their national design competition as a plan to create an innovative urban community space in downtown Omaha. Other aspects of the exhibit focus on early Omaha development dating back to the mid 1850’s, the expansion of suburbs and streetcar transportation, the city’s 1880s industrial boom, the development of the Union Stockyards and South Omaha, and continues through to show Omaha’s sustained progress we see today.
