Community Celebrates Opening of Kerrie Orozco Memorial Baseball Field

On June 26, the first pitch was thrown at the Kerrie Orozco Memorial Baseball Field (parks.cityofomaha.org). The new field, located in Miller Park, has new turf, lighting, sound system, and seats from the historic Rosenblatt Stadium. The first pitch was thrown by Kerrie Orozco’s husband Hector and young daughter Olivia to commemorate the official opening. The field was created as a memorial to police officer, coach, wife, mother, and community mentor, Kerrie Orozco.

Officer Orozco had served with the Omaha Police Department (www.police.cityofomaha.org) for nearly seven-and-a-half years before being shot and killed in the process of serving a felony arrest warrant. Today, she is remembered not only for her police work but for her extensive involvement in community service. Officer Orozco coached baseball with the North Omaha Boys & Girls Club and Police Athletics for Community Engagement (PACE), she volunteered for the Special Olympics Nebraska, and she was a Girls Scout Mentor. This field will help youth for years to come, just as she would have. Officer Orozco was known by her peers and players as a coach who taught children how to step up to the plate, not only on the field, but in their own lives as well. She lead the youth she worked with towards a common goal and taught them how to be team players.

The City of Omaha Parks & Recreation and the Omaha Police Department hope to honor Officer Orozco’s memory with this new field, designed for fun, growth, encouragement, and memories made as a community. Learn more at parks.cityofomaha.org.
