On April 4, 2025, city and community leaders including Mayor Jean Stothert, Omaha Public Schools and the YMCA of Greater Omaha (metroymca.org) announced a transformational project: a new Butler-Gast YMCA and home stadium for North High. This innovative partnership will expand youth opportunities and create lasting impact in North Omaha.
Opening in summer 2027, facilities will promote health, wellness and school pride while ensuring accessible and affordable spaces for youth development and community connection. The YMCA will relocate to 34th & Ames and the stadium will become a new home for Vikings involved in football, soccer, lacrosse, band, JROTC and more.
“This is an exciting moment for North Omaha,” said YMCA CEO Rebecca Deterding. “Through partnerships like this, we’re building more than facilities. We’re investing in people, families and the future of our community.”
The current Butler-Gast YMCA will close this fall with continued YMCA membership access guaranteed for all active Butler-Gast YMCA members as of April 4th, 2025. Staff will also be supported with job opportunities across the YMCA’s 12 locations.
The project is fully funded by local foundations and a North and South Omaha Recovery Grant from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. No homes will be demolished and no eminent domain used.
Project Game ON is about community pride, student success and lasting collaboration between schools and nonprofits. Visit ProjectGameON.org for updates and renderings.
“This effort benefits the entire student experience,” said Omaha Public Schools Superintendent Matthew Ray. “It’s a powerful boost for Viking pride and the future of North Omaha.”
