For many performing artists, the stage is their workplace—and this is also true for one special pet who is cast in the party scene of The Nutcracker, presented by Ballet Nebraska! Last year was the inaugural season of the partnership between Ballet Nebraska and the Nebraska Humane Society on their venture charmingly named “The Muttcracker.” Through this new program, a performer of the furry variety currently available for adoption is chosen to make his or her debut as a company member for the annual holiday production. In the true spirit of the season, the exposure from several performances helps at least one four-legged orphan find a new home just in time for the holidays.

Photo_Ballet_Nebraska_Mimi_Omaha_NebraskaThe fabulous canine star selected for last year’s run was Mimi, a tiny Chihuahua with a huge personality meant for the stage. The audience was treated to a cuteness overload as she confidently pranced around like a miniature dancer in her holiday best right along with the party members in the classic opening scene of The Nutcracker. Mimi was also incredibly popular with the cast and crew, who loved having her around throughout all of the rehearsals, and was adopted right after the final performance. As a result of its success last year, both organizations are proud to continue this partnership in 2014 and for many years to come.

The 5th season of Ballet Nebraska’s performance of The Nutcracker kicks off on November 22nd at the IWCC Arts Center and continues on December 6-7 at the Orpheum Theater. Make sure to catch one of the shows to see this year’s adorable canine star in action! And for those of you who are thinking about adding a furry member to your family this holiday season, please consider visiting the Nebraska Humane Society. The opportunity to make a holiday wish come true for one of the many pets who desperately need a forever home is one of the best gifts you can give!
