Mr. Handyman professionally performs maintenance and repairs for homeowners and businesses.  The company has had a presence in Omaha since 2003.  The current Mr. Handyman of Papillion has been exceeding customer expectations since 2007 and is headed by Dan Johnson, President and Jackie Webster, Office Manager.

What do you think makes you different from other companies similar to yours?
First of all we are a professional handyman service company.  We offer licensed, bonded and insured service technicians that have passed a thorough background check and are subjected to drug screening.  We also require a minimum of 15 years of trades experience to be considered for employment.

We also offer great value for the price.  Our experienced technicians can complete most anything on a honey-do list that your honey just won’t or can’t do.  The quality of our service technicians is what makes Mr. Handyman so successful.

What kind of community organizations/groups are you involved with?
(BBB) Better Business Bureau, Sarpy Chamber of Commerce, Ralston Chamber of Commerce, (MOWBC) Metro Omaha Woman’s Business Center, (NaVOBa) National Veteran-Owned Business Association,  Rebuilding Together Omaha and (NAWIC) National Association of Women in Construction.

Do you have a business philosophy or mission statement?
Although everyone needs money to survive, I am not motivated by money alone.  I feel that if I provide exceptional service and a great work environment for my employees the business will grow and provide a living and decent retirement for everyone at Mr. Handyman.  Our customers’ satisfaction is paramount in this service related industry.

What changes have you seen in the industry and your company in the past few years?
Anyone with a truck and a hammer can hang a shingle out and claim to be a handyman or repairman.  Many do not have insurance or are convicted felons (who is responsible to check up on them?)  I think consumers are wising up and going to the professionals because of past problems with unlicensed, uninsured and “cheaper” repairmen.  The overall value a consumer receives always trumps the cheapest price.  It’s not how much you pay that you have to live with, it’s the end result once the service person leaves your doorstep for the last time.

What do you see happening with the business in the next five years?
A whole lot more regulation and government intervention, which is both good and bad.  It will increase the cost of doing business and the consumer will ultimately pay a much higher price for professional service.  Mr. Handyman will keep up with the changes and remain the professional option for those looking for the best overall service and experience.

What has been your most important achievement as a business?
Reaching the point of profitability and consistently receiving over 60% of our yearly revenue from repeat and referral customers.  We must be doing something right!

What was the biggest turning point in your business?
Hiring Jackie Webster as our office manager.  She brings a lot of skill and expertise to Mr. Handyman and assists with our radio program, marketing, networking and crunching numbers.

What is the most unique or interesting thing about your business that most people don’t know?
We are a locally owned franchise business.   As a franchise system Mr. Handyman has been around for over 11 years and is the nation’s leading employer for handymen.  We have offices in the UK, Canada and Ireland.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Our success rate with our customers is outstanding in this line of business.  We maintain a 4.5 rating (out of 5) from Service Magic, a 72% net promoter rating from Systino (3rd party review/rating verification service) meaning 72% of our customers will use us again and will refer us to friends and family, which Systino says is unheard of in ANY service related industry.

We broadcast a weekly “Ask Mr. Handyman” radio program offering tips and tricks to help listeners keep their repair costs down and maintain their homes.  It is on KCRO 660AM, Saturdays @ 9:30 AM.  Dan is also on live with the KGBI (100.7FM) morning crew Wednesdays @ 8:20 for the Handyman Dan tip.
